Backyard excavation and backfill in Dallas, Texas

The project

The Job

A homeowner in Dallas called to have an existing structure removed from the backyard and the ground brought back to a usable yard. The excavation left a cavity that had to be filled with material that would compact and hold grade, in a fenced residential backyard with the house on one side.

The work

What We Did

We removed the structure, then hauled in select fill and placed it in lifts, compacting each layer with a smooth drum roller. The fill was dumped at the top of the yard and moved into place with a skid steer, which fits through most side yards and gates.

The backfill was brought up to grade and leveled with the rest of the yard.

Questions

Questions about this project

What is backfill?

Backfill is the material used to fill an excavated area back to grade. In North Texas that's typically select fill, a sand and clay mix that holds moisture and compacts well.

Why does backfill need to be compacted?

Uncompacted backfill settles over time and leaves a sunken area in the yard. Placing it in lifts and compacting each one keeps the finished grade where it belongs.

Can heavy equipment get into a residential backyard?

Usually. On our Dallas job the fill was dumped at the top of the yard and moved into place with a skid steer, which fits through most side yards and gates.

Can I build on backfilled ground?

Properly compacted backfill can support patios, sheds, and landscaping. Structures with a foundation typically need an engineer to verify compaction first.
