How Often a Septic Tank Needs Pumping
How often a septic tank needs pumping depends on the tank size, number of people using the system, water usage and the amount of solids entering the tank. Homes, businesses and high-occupancy properties can have very different pumping schedules.
The best way to know is to check the tank. During a septic inspection, we measure sludge and scum levels to determine whether the tank needs to be pumped or can safely wait.
Pump sooner if:
- More people are using the system than it was sized for.
- A garbage disposal runs daily.
- The tank has never been pumped and nobody knows how old it is.
- Drains are slow or the aerobic alarm has been on.

What does septic maintenance include?
Service on the pump, aerator, floats, control box and alarm on aerobic, low pressure dosing and drip systems, checks on the spray heads or drip lines, and on aerobic systems a check and refill of the chlorine tablet container with septic-grade tablets, which is a required item on the yearly TCEQ maintenance report. Trash tank pump outs are scheduled based on the sludge and scum levels in the tank.
Do you service a system you did not install?
Yes. Pump maintenance, pump outs and inspections are available on any system in our service area, whoever installed it.
How do I know if my tank needs pumping?
The sludge and scum levels in the tank are measured during an inspection, and that reading says whether a pump out is due. Slow drains, odor, a wet spot over the tank or an aerobic alarm are signs not to wait.
What is a trash tank?
On an aerobic system, the trash tank is the first compartment, where solids settle before the water moves on to the aeration chamber. It is the compartment that gets pumped out.
Can I use pool chlorine in my aerobic septic system?
No. The chlorine tablet container on an aerobic system takes tablets made specifically for septic systems. Pool chlorine is a different product. If the container is empty or has the wrong tablets in it, the water leaving the system is not being treated.
What happens if an aerobic system is never serviced?
The aerator or pump eventually fails, treatment stops, and untreated water goes out the spray heads or backs up. Solids that were never pumped carry through to the pump and the field. Regular service costs far less than that.
