A swale can move water across a yard or along a property line without creating a deep ditch. For heavier runoff, a drainage ditch gives the water more room to move. When that drainage path crosses a driveway, we install a culvert underneath so the water keeps flowing without washing out the drive.

Why does water stand in my yard for days after it rains?
The soil across Collin County is black clay, which does not absorb water. If the ground is not shaped to move rain off the lot, it sits in the lowest spot until it evaporates. The fix is giving the water a path: regrading, a swale or a ditch.
Can grading fix standing water near my foundation?
Usually, yes. Drainage grading reshapes the ground so it falls away from the house on every side. Clay that stays wet against one side of a foundation moves the slab, so this is the first thing to correct.
What is a swale?
A shallow, wide, grassed channel graded along a property line or across a slope to carry runoff to the street or a ditch. It is gentle enough to mow over and works because of its grade, not its depth.
