Skid steer moving select fill into a demolished in-ground pool cavity in Dallas

The project

The Job

This Dallas homeowner wanted their in-ground pool gone permanently. The native brown dirt on the lot was not enough material to fill the hole, and it was not the right material either. The cavity had to be filled with something that would compact tight and stay put, or the yard would sink where the deep end used to be.

The work

What We Did

We demoed the pool shell, then trucked in select fill, a sand and clay mix with a small particle size that holds moisture and compacts tight. The fill was dumped at the top of the yard and moved into the old pool cavity with a skid steer.

The fill went in lifts, and a smooth drum roller compacted each lift before the next one so there were no voids or loose spots left underneath. The last lift was brought up to grade and leveled with the rest of the yard.

Equipment

Equipment on Site

  • Tracked skid steer for moving select fill into the cavity
  • Smooth drum roller for compacting each lift
  • Trucked-in select fill

Finished

The Result

A level, solid section of yard you would never know had a pool in it, finished in a day and a half with open access for equipment. Properly compacted fill like this supports a patio or a shed; anything with a foundation typically needs an engineer to sign off on the compaction first.

Questions

Questions about this project

How much does a pool fill-in cost?

Every pool is different in size, depth, and how much material has to be hauled in.

How long does it take?

The time it takes to fill in a pool after the pool is demoed depends on the size of the pool and ease of access for equipment. This job had open access & it took about a day & a half.

What is select fill?

It's a mix of sand and clay used for fill work here in Texas. It holds moisture, has a small particle size, and compacts well. That's why we use it instead of whatever dirt happens to be on site.

Why does the fill have to be compacted in lifts?

If you dump the whole thing in at once and pack the top, you get voids and loose pockets underneath. Those settle later and leave you with a sunken spot in the yard. Placing it in lifts and rolling each one prevents that.

Can I build on top of a filled-in pool later?

Sometimes, but it depends on how the fill was placed and what you want to build. A properly compacted fill can support things like a patio or shed. Anything with a foundation typically needs an engineer to sign off on the compaction first.
